Betsy Ross Flag

Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag for George Washington. Washington wanted 6 pointed stars on the flag, but Betsy showed him the 5 pointed star. The state department does not have any proof (of Betsy actually sewing the first flag), but Betsy still gets credit for sewing the first American flag.

Back to school? It’s a jam for local students

by: Carman Peterson
cpeterson@barrowcountynews.com
August 7, 2011

Hundreds of Barrow County students got a helping hand with their back to school shopping through the annual Back to School Jam, a collaborative effort between Barrow County Family Connections/Communities in Schools and Barrow County School’s Family Academy, held Friday morning.

The Back to School Jam provides free school supplies to students from Kindergarten to high school. Although students or their parents had to provide proof of Barrow residency to take part, no other qualifications or pre-registration was needed.

"It’s open to anybody who wants to come out," said BCS social worker Shannon Derrick. "With the economy the way it’s been, the last few years it seems like there’s been a desperate need for parents with school supplies."

"One of the things we want people to do is get off to a good start," added BCS employee Andrea Lott. "Things are hard right now, and school supplies, unfortunately, are very expensive. We wish we could do more, but we’ve done well with the [donations] we had and I think that will make a nice dent."

Tims Ford Vacation

The first thing we did was go to the aquarium. My favorite part was going to see the sharks. They were very cool. There were 5 of them. I also thought there were 6. I saw some jellyfish and lots of different kinds of seahorses. My favorite kind of seahorse was the red horses. Mommy’s favorite sea horse was the sea dragon. And we had lots of fun. It was very fun to touch lots of things at the aquarium. The butterflies in the butterfly garden were soooooooooooo pretty.

Up next, we went to our cabin at (Tim’s Ford State Park). We checked in. We lived in number 3. The first thing that we did is unpack and then ate. The next day, we went to Savage Falls where we went on a hike. It was fun. I got to go across the bridge at Savage Falls. It was very much fun. I got in the waterfall. It was cold at first, but then I got used to it. After that, I got discouraged because I fell on a rock. It hurt, but Poppa helped me up and I kept on swimming. The water felt good on my boo-boo. Poppa stood under the waterfall.

On Wednesday, we woke up and went to the market (Swiss Market-Mennonite Grocery). It was cool. We bought gummy bears, a gummy hot dog, and cheese. (whispering) Mom, we forgot to buy the honeycomb for Poppa. That same day, we went to Jack Daniel. It was fun but smelly. I didn’t like the smell. Jack Daniel got mad and kicked his safe thing because he couldn’t open. He couldn’t remember the code. So he kicked it with his foot. His toe broke, and they had to cut it off. Then he lost his foot. Then his ankle. Then all of his leg. They gave him a metal leg and that’s what we remember. It was very fun. Doc and KK came to stay at the cabin with us. It was nice to see them.

The next day, KK, Mommy, and me went to Weaver’s Point on my bike. It was very pretty. I threw sticks out into the lake. Then we kept on going and came back. When we came back, I was tired out, but I still had enough energy to swim. The pool was fun. I jumped off the diving board into 12 feet. The pool was huge. That night I went fishing with Poppa and Doc. I caught lots of fish in the evening and I even got to eat a moon pie while I was in the boat. We got splashed by a wave. It was cool!

The fifth day, we woke up and Sam and Noah came! We had an evening bike ride. Sam and I rode way ahead a lot. Mommy ran to keep up with us. It was very fun. Also that day we got to go swimming with Sam and Noah. Sam and I jumped off the diving board. Noah couldn’t jump off the diving board because he was wearing his floaties and floaties can’t be worn on the diving board. Sam and I jumped a few times and then went to play with Noah. We also played on the playground. It was fun.

The next day, Sam, Noah, and I were going to the pool, and we had a storm. A bad storm. Sticks fell. The leaves from the trees were all falling down. We lost air (power). We almost had to leave the cabin, but while we went for a bike ride, the air came back on. On the bike ride, Sam and I were very ahead again. Mommy drove the car over to the bike trail where we were waiting for her so that we could ride the rest of the way to the cabin. When we got back, Sam and I split a bagel. Noah got back (from his bike ride),and we played. We went on an environmental hike where we picked up trash. We found a lot of trash!

The next day was the last day, and it was sad. We got all packed up and cleaned up the cabin nice and neat. I was very sad to leave. We got to let out the worms and crickets (that we had been using as bait). We picked them up and looked at them and played with them. It was fun, fun, fun!

My favorite thing about vacation was seeing Sam and Noah and helping the world be a better place by picking up the trash. That helps the deer and I saw lots of deer. I even saw a pregnant deer. I also saw a fox and a bunny. They were very pretty. There were lots of woodchucks.

Bye! This is the family trip by Katie Beth Pendergrass.

Book Review: Lilly, the Wild Cat

My favorite part of Lilly the Wild Cat was when Lilly decided she wanted to be a wild cat because she got all messy. I would recommend this book to Grampa, Grandaddy, and Rachel because they like cats. One thing I would change about this book is to make Lilly a dog. Be on the lookout for my Daisy the Wild Dog story written by me!

Mrs. Meyer's Class WINS!

Today was awesome! There was ping pong. Jada was my partner. There was volleyball. We threw the ball over the net. We used a beach ball to play volleyball. Then we played gold. We hit the ball into a hole. Mrs. Meyer's class won all the races. The first one was a relay race with a baton. Then we raced in a sack race. Then we had a three-legged race. I was tied with up with Ben. We won all the races. Next we played tug-a-war. The boys went first on tug-o-war, and Mrs. Meyer's boys won! Then the girls -- Mrs. Meyer's girls won. Last we had a shoe toss. We lined up in a great big line, and on the whistle we all kicked our shoes as far as we could. Oh, we also had jump rope contests. Jada and I were so good; we had to jump on one foot. We had a blast!

Gatlinburg

I got coffee spices for my mom (sugar, sweet-n-low, creamer from the hotel) cause she likes coffee with spices. Her real surprise is a box of taffy. There's 19 taffies for you and Papa. We saw them make taffy. It was cool. They stretched it out. This one is chocolate...try it. They stretched it by going round and pull. Round and pull. I got a Fannie Farkle cup. One for Papa and one for me and you to share. Here's all the things I bought. Well Grampa bought the Moonshine Taffy, but I paid him back. I also bought Extreme Airheads. I bought a pretty dolphin necklace that has a flower inside. More Taffy! I love Taffy. I have money left in my thingy (wallet). The stuff I bought was a really good price. Here's the list of all the things I did: 1. I went to the rock store. I saw really pretty rocks. 2. I saw real Indians, you know, Native American Indians. We went to Cherokee. 3. I saw elephants in the hotel. NOT real ones. Like a big plastic one up to my chest. 4. I saw people pulling taffy. 5. I went on a loop-de-loop, fish hook road (curvy roads). 6. I saw snow on the mountains. 7. I rode on a trolley for an hour. All I did was sit. 8. They (hotel) had a river pool. A river pool is a pool that looks like a river. And there was a hot tub. Grampa and I soaked in the bubbles. It was so much fun. 9. I went through lots of tunnels, and we honk, honked the horn. 10. Grampa fed a bear next to the hotel. It was fake. He put Sour Straws in the bear's mouth. We saw a real turkey and a real dear. Grampa saw the turkey but not the dear. Nana saw the dear but not the turkey. I saw both. 11. There was a huge pool. I swam in the 5 feet. I held my nose and jumped in and pushed off the bottom. I jumped off Grampa's shoulders. My new goggles are cool.

Cloudy and the Chance of Pies

Cloudy and the Chance of Pies

Written and Illustrated by: Kathryn

On Monday for lunch and supper, we had our Mama’s famous fudge chocolate pie. It fell down on all of these days: on Tuesday and on Wednesday and on Thursday and on Friday and on Saturday and on Sunday!

“Really? Did that really happen?” asked Isabella.

“Yes. Yes,” said Kaitlin.

“Wow! That is amazing. Are you impressed?” asked Isabella.

“Yes. Yes, I am. I am” said Kaitlin. “I am impressed.”

“Hey!”

“What?”

“Hey, look up the pies are falling down,” said Isabella.

“Bring out the plates,” said Kaitlin.

“Hey, I caught one.”

“Let me see. Mm… I can’t wait until I catch one,” said Kaitlin. “Hey, I caught one too. Hooray.”

“Mm,” Kaitlin and Isabella said together. “Ooh. Ah. Mm. This is good, but I got to get home.”

Kaitlin said, “Ok. I know. I will see you tomorrow. Let’s do our handshake.” They clapped, wiggled their hands, shook their heads, wiggled their necks, and danced by holding hands and spinning at the same time.

“Ok!”

“Let’s go home,” said Kaitlin.

“I am having fun! I don’t want to go home. Let’s catch just one more pie.”

“Let’s go play just a minute.”

“OH, BOY!” shouted Isabella.

“What, honey?” asked Dad?

“Hey. What? What are you doing?” Isabella asked Kaitlin. The girls ran to their bikes and rode to their friend, Billy’s, house. They shared the chocolate fudge pie and made loud music.

The girls went home and made more loud music because they had more instruments like drums and other loud instruments. The pie made them hyper because they caught the perfect pie that had the energy in it. Isabella said, “I love playing instruments.”

“Stop making that noise, girls and boy” said mom.

“Sorry. We were too loud, “said Kaitlin and Isabella, who were sisters.

“It’s ok.”

The girls stopped playing the instruments and ate more pie. Yum!

The End

Author’s Note

I hoped you enjoyed the story. Maybe you can make the famous pie that was in the story. This is the recipe:

Chocolate Fudge Pie

1 c. sugar

2 tbsp. flour

4 tbsp. cocoa

1/2 c. milk

2 whole eggs

3 tbsp. butter, melted

1 tsp. vanilla flavoring

Dump all ingredients into a mixing bowl and beat well. Pour into an unbaked pastry shell. Bake in preheated oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Cool before slicing.

Sort of, Kind of Weird

One day... it was a horrible, horrible day because I hit myself on the bed. When I got into the afternoon, it was better because I saw Santa. It was Christmas Eve night, when I saw Santa. He was delivering presents. I heard a noise and went downstairs. I saw Santa putting presents under the tree. Santa asked me if I wanted to go to my friend's house--her house was the next stop.
I said, "Yes, let's go." He did not tell me what he got for me. I knew it was just what I wanted. When Santa left after we went to my friend's house, I burst into tears, stretched my arms, yawned, and said, "I think it is time to go to sleep."

That next morning, I opened the smallest present. It was just what I wanted: a bell off Santa's reindeer. I also opened a yoyo and a bike. Later on Christmas day, of course it was the next night, it was sort of, kind of weird because Santa came again. He asked me to go to Russia to deliver the presents. I said, "Yes, that would be so exciting!"
Santa said, "What are you waiting for? Let's go!"

It was morning when we returned from Russia. Mom was awake and looking for me because I was late for school. Mom yelled, "You're in trouble, missy." My brother started to laugh at me. I told him to laugh at someone his own age since he is only 3. Since it was my show-n-tell say, I took my reindeer bell to school and told all about my adventures with Santa.

"The bell is awesome," everyone said. Everyone except my brother!

Farm Report

The day after the farm play day:

I went to a farm. I rode my bike. I saw frog eggs. I went frog catching. I did not catch a frog, but I saw one. I did touch frog eggs. Slimy. I went fishing. I did not catch anything. I made a mud cake with leaves for decorations. I had a picnic. I had pretzels, a sandwich, apples, and lemonade. And we had water. I had fun at the farm.

On an assignment from school about a week after the farm visit:

I like going to the farm. I also like eating ice cream after the farm! I like riding my bike on the farm. I like touching frog eggs! And I like cartwheeling on the farm. I like doing handstands on the farm.

100th Day of Kindergarten

First, I lost a tooth! It is a special day to lose a tooth.

We had a busy day. We wore these "100" hats everywhere we went. We made a munchies snack mix. We put 10 of everything like 10 skittles, 10 pretzels, to make 100. 10 groups of 10. Except I don't like goldfish so I only had 90 in my munchie mix. In PE, we had to count 100 balls and throw 100 balls. We read Kindergarten the 100th Day. It was a good book. We made necklaces with 100 Froot Loops. 50 on each side. Fifty plus fifty is one hundred. I also got to count 100 pennies, and then we got to count with a partner. Chris and I counted 100 marker chips. We counted to one hundred by 4s, 2s, 1s, 5s, and 10s. It was a fun day.

Mr. Burslem was our speaker during chapel. He talked about obedience. He told us a story about his two little friends that fought over toys. Saying things like "mom, she took my toy" or "no, that's mine." We shouldn't fight over toys. We should be kind and share with our friends.

I think that I will stay home from tennis today. I had a really big day. I think it is time to relax.

Santaroar

There was Santaroar who delivered all the presents to the dinosaurs. The Christmasroar was everyday. There were herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. Herbivores ate flowers. Monivores are both meat and flowers. Carnivores ate meat -- watch out you're meat! They might eat you! Also they all got candycances after telling Santaroar what they wanted. All dinosaurs loved candycanes and Christmasroar. They liked to sing Santaroar is Coming to Town.

Snow Experiment #2

Snow on the ground is air and snowflakes. When snow melts, the air is released and water is left. I think there will be 1/2 cup of water after the cup of snow melts. After the air was released, 1/4 cup of water was left. So I learned that snow is mostly air.

Snow Poem

snow
white, cold
snowangels, snowforts
sprinkle snow on Papa's head
snowfights, snowpeople
catch a snowflake
fun, deep
snow

Snow Experiment #1

I have 1/4 cup of snow. I have 1 cup of snow. I think that the littler one will melt faster because it is smaller. The snow is really wet. It smells plain. The littler one weighs less.

Outside temperature 30 degrees. Inside temperature 62 degrees. 30% humidity.
9:37 am I brought the snow in from outside. The cups were packed.
9:47 am The little one is melting. It has more drops in it. The big one is melting a little.
9:57 am The little one is really melting.
10:07am The little one is turning into ice as it heats up and melts. The big one still weighs more.
10:17am The smaller one is almost completely melted. The big one is not ahead of the little one so my hypothesis, I think, is going to be right.
10:27am The little one is mostly water.
10:37am The little one is almost all water. I poured the water out. The big one is half way snow.
10:47am The little one is all water. The little one melted faster. I was right.
